Readings

Isaiah 40 brings the prophet of hope after the exile, and the challenge to prepare a way for the Lord.  2 Peter 3, written about 120, has the author speaking with courage about the “delay” in Christ’s second coming and God’s patience.  Mark 1 verses 1-8 has John the Baptist with his courageous witness which was to cost him his life.

Homily

The theme was to use Advent to reflect on courageous witnesses to Christ and his teaching in our own family. Then characters like Dorothy Day with Catholic Worker Soup Kitchens in the USA, Anton Wallice Clifford founding the Simon Community for the poor. Rosa Parks with the simple courageous bus gesture in the USA. Franzja Egerstater in Austria executed in August ’43 for refusing to join Hitler’s army … despite wife and children, parish priest and local bishop urging him to follow thousands of Catholics into the army. Beatified recently for putting conscience over pressure from loved ones, and the church.

Prayers

These built from the sick of the parish to the political scene, loved ones who have died and challenges to do good for Christmas.
